Beware. Prepare to be captured for the other two books. What following is the same for my reviews of the other two books. For all of us that love a good story, with honest heroes and villains, a well told story with true history in it, based on real English history this is it. If you love the Venerable Bede, this is it. If you like Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" this is it. If you can understand Christian historical references and foibles, this is it. I earnestly wish that I had known these books when I used to read to my children. I can't relate how I rejoiced and wept, feared and triumphed as I read these books. It is not a modern book. It will appeal to anyone that enjoys an historical novel but for children and adults that have a slight grasp of English History A. D. Crake is a standard bearer. I look forward to meeting him in heaven.
The writers style is simplicity itself. He is a teller of tails so is in the story himself with the occasional observation and explanation. I can imagine his telling me (with other listeners) these tales around a fireplace in winter. Everyone, young and old, listening raptly.
The book will not mean the same to every Modern as it does to me. I enjoy history and am proud, generally, of my history. A thrill a minute
